There is a set of rules that apply to the to use and care of batteries. If you are a dealer or a mechanic, you know that most people ignore them. A battery is a simple but sophisticated device that needs to be treated accordingly. A new sealed battery is always good unless physically broken. Your technician is soley responsible for its life or death in the first month and the user is responsible for the balance ( you must inspect and recharge at least once a month). You can eliminate almost all claims, that would most likely be refused by following proper procedures. 1 A battery must be prepared within the hour after the seal has been broken. 2 Only sulphuric acid with a specific gravity of 1,265 must be used (except YT/YTX models supplied with acid). 3 Once filled, the battery must rest for 30 to 60 min., no more, no less. Add acid if level has lowered below full line. 4 It is essential to fully charge the battery the first time (ex.: a battery charged to only 70% will never again accept more than 70% of it’s capacity). 5 The charging rate must never exceed 1/10 of the batterie’s rated power. Do not overheat! Disrupt charging if battery becomes too hot. Permanent damage can result. 6 Charging time varies from 2 to 18 hours depending on battery and charger, sometimes even more (if in doubt, call us). 7 Readjust level with distilled water if necessary. Charge again for 20 min. to mix electrolyte. Never add acid once charged. 8 Check voltage and specific gravity with professional tools. This will give the exact state of the battery. Call immediately if out of specifications. 9 Get with the times! Get yourself a modern pulse charger (similer to the Battery Tender (08-957) that will charge any type of battery (even maintenance free batteries that require special voltage) automatically and with precision.
